Donald Trump recently signed an executive order protecting monuments, memorials, and statues after recent Black Lives Matters protests and riots across the country, following George Floyd’s death.
Why did he sign it?
Although most Black Lives Matter protests remained peaceful, a few of them went out of control. Randall Woodfin (D), mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, told protestors that he would “finish the job” while they were taking down the city’s Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Statues of George Washington were defaced in Baltimore. House speaker Nancy Pelosi also removed portraits from the US Capitol of former speakers who served in the Confederacy.
However, there will be a much larger consequence for vandalism around the country, of up to 10 years in prison. 15 people who were alleged attempting to take down a statue of Andrew Jackson near the White House will be one of the many receiving a sentence.
Although the protests spread awareness, riots cost Minneapolis $55M in damage, and around $1.42B insurance market loss around the country.
